Or it may negatively bias you, as an interviewer, against someone who doesn’t come from a standard CS (or math) background. Some people become great developers without undergoing formal CS education! Checking if candidates can solve algebraic equations, a concept most developers never have to deal with (except for specialised domains), won’t tell you much of their ability, either way.
